Nature always takes its place

August 21, 2025

For several months now, a discreet but revealing phenomenon has been attracting attention: Haiti is becoming greener again. Where landscapes had become impoverished over the years due to the massive felling of trees for charcoal production, we are now seeing an unexpected regeneration.

The reason is paradoxical: widespread insecurity.

With national roads closed, interdepartmental coal trade has almost ground to a halt. The West Department, the main consumer market, is now difficult to access. In several areas, even some neighborhoods have become inaccessible, significantly reducing logging.

Thus, nature is reclaiming its rights. Once bare hills are covered with young shoots, spaces are greening again, restoring some landscapes to their former glory.

This observation highlights a fundamental truth: environmental destruction in Haiti is directly linked to poverty, the lack of energy alternatives, and the coal economy. While insecurity has temporarily curbed this destructive trade, it is now up to decision-makers to transform this enforced pause into a genuine opportunity for ecological transition.

Because nature, it, only asks to be reborn
